Registan Square

The Registan square is one of the main attractions of the city, it has acquired world fame due to the majestic architectural ensemble. It is surrounded by three magnificent madrassas, each of which has its own unique decor. Due to the outstanding buildings of architecture, UNESCO has included Samarkand in the World Heritage List.

If we turn to the sources, earlier the Registan was covered with sand, that is, a sandy place, from which it took its name. As for the buildings surrounding it, they did not exist either, people gathered on the square, in order to announce the decrees of the ruler and other news, as well as various events were held, such as holidays, executions, army duties, etc.

Over time, retail outlets began to be located on the square, where people were selling products of their labor. Times went on, people from different parts of the world flocked to the city more and more, as a result the square became the center of violent trade and liveliness. At the moment, three objects are located on the square, namely, the Ulugbek madrasah (erected in the epoch of Ulugbek, completed in 1420), the Sher-Dor madrasah (erected by the emir of Samarkand Yalangtush Bahadur, finished in 1636) and Tilla-Kari madrasa (the construction was initiated by Yalangtush Bahadur, construction was completed in 1660).

Over the years, Samarkand has undergone great changes, this is especially strongly reflected in the monuments of architecture. In Soviet times, the activity of the madrasa was discontinued, the grand buildings were on the verge of destruction. It was then that the restoration work was undertaken to revive the former beauty of the Registan.

The appearance of the current square is the merit of the complex work of the restorers. Today, various celebrations and events are held on the square; every year a huge number of tourists come to Samarkand to see firsthand the beauty of Oriental architecture.
