The architectural ensemble of Khoja Gaukushon

Initially, the place where the grandiose architectural landmark of the ancient city of Bukhara is now located was a massacre. In subsequent years, this place was reserved for the trading platform, but this in no way affected its name. Over time, in the 16th century, the square began to be built up, in its place madrasas, mosques and minarets were erected - later this architectural ensemble was named Khoja Gaukushon.

If you translate literally, then the name translates into Russian as killing bulls. Like all architectural masterpieces, the monument is located in the old part of Bukhara.

It is worth mentioning who initiated the construction and on whose money the architectural ensemble was built. This man was Sheikh Khoja Sadda, he is better known by such name as Khoja the Great. This was the reason that the ensemble was named in his honor. At the beginning of the 16th century, a trapezium-shaped madrasah was built, preserving the traditional shape of the courtyards. The new architecture was named Khoja Kalon.

Years later, at the end of the 16th century, the construction of another building begins, which is called Masjidi Jami, which means “Khodzha Mosque”. After the death of the sheikh, Chor-Bakr became his burial place, where other sheikhs also rested. It should be emphasized that these magnificent buildings were created in turbulent times, which indicates how developed the creative potential of the people.
